InterSystems creates powerful and dynamic tools that empower developers to create custom databases and business applications, particularly in data-rich industries like healthcare and financial services. Their solutions power some of the world’s largest enterprises, but they found they had little name recognition compared to their competitors. They realized they were operating with an incomplete picture of the customers for their IRIS Data Platform. InterSystems approached Studio Science to get a closer look at the needs, anxieties, and desires of the key influencers of the sales processes: developers.
A Two-Pronged Approach
Studio Science identified a two-pronged approach for understanding and iterating on the IRIS experience. The first prong involved creating and delivering quick-win solutions for the company to improve the demo experience. We tested these solutions with developers to ensure that they met the basic needs of the target market. These small wins were easy to roll out and gave the InterSystems team quick and measurable successes.
The second prong would be in-depth demographic research, using people-centric methods to map out every step of the developer journey to choosing a new platform. We talked to many developers across industries and job titles to get a full picture of the journey to selecting a new database system. We synthesized the information to find what developers were thinking, feeling, and doing at different points in the database evaluation process. A few hundred post-it notes later, our team had successfully mapped out the entire developer journey, giving InterSystems the complete story of their customer.
